Malta packs an unusual amount of coastline into a very small cruising ground. From the marina at Portomaso you can be anchored in the Blue Lagoon in forty minutes, off the cliffs of Gozo in an hour, and inside Grand Harbour — one of the great natural harbours on earth — in twenty. Compare that with the French Riviera or the Balearics, where a meaningful anchorage is often a two-hour transit, and the appeal of a Malta yacht charter becomes obvious: almost every minute of your day is spent swimming, eating and looking at something remarkable rather than watching a wake.

The archipelago is also blessed with genuinely reliable weather. Between May and October the islands average more than eleven hours of sunshine a day, the sea holds 23–27°C from June onwards, and the prevailing northwest Majjistral breeze is steady enough for sailing yet rarely strong enough to spoil a day at anchor. Sheltered water can be found on one side of the islands whatever the wind is doing, so charters are cancelled for weather far less often here than elsewhere in the Med.

Then there is the practical side. Malta is a full EU member state with English as an official language, a mature superyacht services industry, world-class marina infrastructure and a rigorously enforced commercial licensing regime. Everything from crew certification to VAT invoicing works the way European clients expect it to, and there is a direct flight from almost every major European city.

A bareboat yacht charter in Malta puts you in command. You take the yacht, you plan the route, you are responsible for the safety of everyone on board. It is the cheapest way to spend a week on the water and, for an experienced sailor with a recognised licence and logged sea miles, the most rewarding. Expect a thorough handover briefing, a refundable security deposit and a check-out inspection on return.

A skippered charter is the middle path and by far the most popular for day charters in Malta. A licensed local skipper handles navigation, anchoring and the tender. You gain local knowledge — which cove is empty on a Saturday, where the swell wraps around Comino in a northwesterly — without any of the responsibility. For most guests this is the correct choice.

A crewed luxury yacht charter adds interior service. A hostess manages the galley, the table and the guest cabins; on larger yachts a chef cooks to order and a deckhand runs the toys. The yacht becomes a floating villa with staff, and the difference in how relaxed the day feels is disproportionate to the difference in price. Above roughly 24 metres, crewed is the only format offered.

A motor yacht buys you time. At 20–24 knots the whole archipelago is inside a one-hour radius, which means a full-day charter can genuinely include Comino, the Gozo coast and a sunset run through Grand Harbour. Air conditioning, a flybridge and a large bathing platform make hot August days considerably more comfortable, and motor yachts hold their guest numbers better: twelve people on a 68-foot flybridge are far less cramped than twelve on a 52-foot monohull.

A sailing yacht buys you atmosphere and economy. Under sail the engines are silent, fuel costs collapse and the crossing to Gozo becomes the point of the day rather than a transit. Weekly rates are a fraction of the motor equivalent, which is why Malta sailing holidays are the best value in the fleet. The trade-off is speed and, on a monohull, heel — you will not see three islands in a single day under sail.

A catamaran splits the difference. You get sailing costs, motor-yacht deck space, no heel at anchor and a shallow draft that lets a skipper anchor closer to shore than any monohull. For families and mixed groups it is very often the right answer, and it is the format we recommend most for a first catamaran charter in Malta.

Every yacht offered for commercial charter in Malta must hold a valid commercial licence issued by Transport Malta, carry passenger liability insurance, pass annual safety inspections and operate with certified crew. This matters more than it sounds: a substantial number of boats advertised online to visitors are private vessels operating illegally, without commercial insurance. If a guest is injured aboard an unlicensed boat, the insurance simply does not respond.

Passenger limits are also set by law — twelve guests under way on almost all crewed yachts — and the captain retains final authority on weather, routing and safety. The best charter days share one quality: someone thought about the sequence in advance. Departing at 08:30 rather than 10:00 changes the entire character of a Comino day. Serving lunch at anchor in Mgarr ix-Xini instead of in the lagoon means eating in shade and silence. Turning for home ninety minutes before sunset puts Grand Harbour in golden light exactly as you pass it. None of these decisions cost more; they simply require a planner who knows the islands.

Provisioning follows the same logic. A crewed charter runs a formal provisioning list — dietary requirements, allergies, children's food, preferred wines, brand of coffee, whether anyone actually drinks champagne at eleven in the morning. Guests who fill it in honestly always eat better. For weekly charters this is handled through the APA, so you are only ever charged what the captain actually spends.

Finally, build in slack. The most common regret we hear is an itinerary packed too tightly: four anchorages in eight hours turns a luxury charter into a bus tour.
