The animated layer shows the wind field over Malta, Comino, Gozo and the surrounding channels in knots. Below it, each of our six cruising areas is labelled calm, moderate or exposed for the wind actually forecast today — the arrow points the way the wind is blowing.

Malta's winds and where they leave you sheltered

Majjistral (NW)

Malta's dominant wind. Builds swell along the north-west coast and Dwejra, leaves the south-east and Grand Harbour side comfortable. Blue Lagoon stays usable in a light Majjistral but gets choppy above about 15 knots.

Grigal (NE)

The awkward one for departures — it pushes straight into Portomaso and Sliema. We usually shift boarding to a more sheltered berth and cruise south or into the lee of Comino.

Xlokk (SE)

Warm and humid, kicks up the south coast including Marsaxlokk and the Blue Grotto. The north-east coast, Mellieha and Santa Maria Bay become the better plan.

Rih Isfel / Lbic (S–SW)

Less common but can arrive quickly in spring and autumn. Comino and the Gozo channel stay workable while the south coast closes out.

The go / no-go thresholds our skippers use

  • Running — gusts up to 20 kn, Hs up to 0.8 m. Full itinerary including Comino and the Blue Lagoon.
  • Sheltered routes only — gusts 20–28 kn, Hs 0.8–1.5 m. We cruise the lee coast and pick calmer swim stops. Stabilised 30m+ yachts normally run as planned.
  • Likely postponed — gusts above 28 kn or Hs above 1.5 m. Day charters move to another date.

Thresholds apply to day boats and open cruisers. Figures on this page are advisory model output; the skipper's assessment on the morning of the charter is final.

Malta sea conditions — questions we are asked

Are yacht charters running in Malta today?

Charters run on most days of the season. Our skippers use gusts and significant wave height rather than average wind: up to 20 knots of gust and 0.8 m of wave height we run the full itinerary, between 20–28 knots and 0.8–1.5 m we switch to sheltered coasts, and above 28 knots or 1.5 m a day boat charter is normally moved to another date. The live panel at the top of this page shows which band today and the next two days fall into.

Which side of Malta is sheltered when it is windy?

Malta's coasts shelter each other. In a north-westerly Majjistral the south and east coasts — Grand Harbour, Marsaxlokk and the Blue Grotto in settled swell — stay workable. In a southerly or south-easterly Xlokk the north-east coast, St Paul's Bay, Mellieha and Comino's Santa Maria side are the calm options. Can a superyacht still cruise when day boats cannot?

Usually yes. A 30m+ motor yacht with stabilisers is comfortable in conditions that would end a day-boat charter, so amber days that stop an open cruiser are often normal cruising for a superyacht. The limit then becomes the tender transfers and swim stops rather than the passage itself.

What happens if the weather cancels my charter?

If the skipper calls off the day for weather, we move your charter to another date that suits you at no cost, or refund it in full if no alternative date works. The decision is made the evening before or on the morning of the charter, never later than the scheduled departure.

Where does the data on this page come from?

Wind speed, gusts and direction come from the ECMWF forecast model, and wave height, wave period and sea surface temperature from the Open-Meteo marine wave models, sampled hourly at six points around the Maltese islands. Figures are refreshed every 30 minutes and averaged across charter daytime hours, 08:00–20:00 CET. They are advisory: the skipper's assessment on the day is final.
